Don’t leave without tasting a refreshing bottle of Sundrop soda. Pick up a case from local bottler Twig’s Beverage in downtown Shawano. They’ve been bottling it the old fashioned way since 1951. They are the only one in the nation still producing the deliciously citrusy “Golden Girl Cola” in returnable bottles. Now you can view the bottling process up close and personal, sample various soda flavors, view Sundrop memorabilia, videos and experience fun interactive displays at their Sundrop Museum, 920 S. Franklin Street in Shawano.
Embrace your inner foodie with a hearty helping of award-winning Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Bacon. If you have never visited the old-fashioned store, you are really missing out. From the sound of the jingling bell as you open the door, to the rustic wood plank floor, the pot-bellied stove and fresh buttermilk, to the view of the original stone smokehouse; it is a step back in time. Praised by the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Wine Spectator and Saveur magazines, Nueske's is loved by chefs, restaurateurs, and foodies alike for its sweet, smoky applewood flavor and aroma.
In early spring, sugar maple trees are tapped by local farms, coaxing the liquid “gold” that is turned into delicious pure maple syrup. You’ll notice buckets hanging on the trees in our sugar maple forests. Local pure maple syrup is sold at various specialty shops in the area.
And of course, check out the supply of regional cheeses at grocery stores and specialty shops. Ask for fresh cheese curds. The squeakier the better!
